Beat the ATS: Formatting & Keywords for PM Roles

Before a human sees your resume, an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) parses it into fields. If the parser stumbles, your experience never gets scored. Most "qualified but never heard back" stories are really parsing failures.

What breaks ATS parsing

• Tables and columns — multi-column layouts scramble reading order. Use a single column.
• Text in images, headers or footers — often skipped entirely. Keep contact details in the body.
• Uncommon section names — use "Experience," "Skills," "Education," not clever labels.
• Fancy fonts and icons — stick to standard fonts; skip graphics.

Get the keywords right

An ATS ranks you partly on keyword match to the job description. Mirror the language of the role: if it says "roadmap," "A/B testing," and "stakeholder management," those exact phrases should appear where they are true for you. Do not stuff — weave them into real bullets.

Safe-format checklist

• Single column, standard headings, a .docx or text-based PDF.
• Job titles, companies, and dates on their own clear lines.
• Spell out an acronym once: "Product-Led Growth (PLG)."
